The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) reported that up to 2,000 species of the Philippines’ 56,000 flora and fauna are critically endangered and at risk of extinction.
DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga cited habitat destruction, climate change, human activity, and disasters as major threats to these species.
The agency is focusing on the conservation of five key species: the Philippine Eagle, marine turtles, dugong, cockatoo, and tamaraw.
Additionally, the pangolin, the most trafficked animal, has been added to the agency’s conservation efforts.
The DENR has secured funding for these efforts in 2024, partnering with organizations such as WWF, the Forest Foundation of the Philippines, and the Katala Foundation.
