The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) is considering accelerating the Mindoro-Panay interconnection project amid recurring grid alerts and power supply deficits in the Visayas.
NGCP spokesperson Cynthia Alabanza said the project, originally targeted for completion by 2040, could be fast-tracked with full government policy support.
She noted that the Visayas is currently a net power importer, while the existing grid was not designed for long-term or daily electricity imports.
Alabanza said the project would still take more than five years to build, with its development potentially affecting power generation planning in Luzon.
The Department of Energy is also pursuing the interconnection to create a stronger link between Luzon and the Visayas, allowing the grids to share excess power during shortages and plant outages.
