The Chamber of Mines of the Philippines (COMP) has urged local government units (LGUs) to lift mining bans following the Supreme Court’s nullification of Occidental Mindoro’s 25-year mining moratorium.
The SC ruling emphasized that local mining bans violate the Philippine Mining Act of 1995 and the Constitution by conflicting with national laws.
COMP said the decision provides clear policy direction that aligns local government actions with national mining policies, crucial for attracting investments.
While respecting LGUs’ autonomy to regulate mining projects, COMP stressed that local ordinances must not contradict national laws.
The group also called on LGUs like Palawan, which recently imposed a 50-year mining moratorium, to comply with the SC decision for consistent investment policies.
