Senator Loren Legarda called for stronger efforts to preserve and make Philippine historical records accessible after three local collections were included in the UNESCO Memory of the World Regional Register for Asia and the Pacific on Nov. 5.
The recognized collections are the Laguna Copperplate Inscription, the Baybayin Documents housed at the University of Santo Tomas Archives, and the Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group Audiovisual Archive.
Legarda said the recognition highlights the importance of protecting the country’s history, writing traditions, and cultural practices for future generations.
She urged government agencies, cultural institutions, archives, and researchers to work together to ensure the collections are preserved, studied, and made available to the public.
The senator also cited her legislative efforts, including the National Cultural Heritage Act and the Cultural Mapping Law, which strengthen the protection and promotion of Philippine cultural heritage.
