Several lawmakers from the majority bloc in the House of Representatives have expressed support for the Philippines to rejoin the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Assistant Majority Leader Jude Acidre and Assistant Majority Leader Jil Bongalon emphasized the importance of ICC membership for providing an additional avenue for justice when domestic systems fail.
Deputy Majority Leader Paolo Ortega also suggested that rejoining the ICC should be seriously reconsidered.
However, lawmakers noted that the final decision rests with the Senate, as the Constitution requires at least two-thirds of senators to approve the treaty.
Some members, like Assistant Majority Leader Ernesto Dionisio, believe the country can still cooperate with the ICC under existing laws, though he stressed the need for objective discussions without political influence.
