A US federal judge on Monday temporarily blocked a Trump administration policy that would impose stricter limits on the length of stay for foreign students and journalists in the United States.
District Judge Dennis Saylor issued a preliminary injunction just one day before the new Department of Homeland Security visa rules were set to take effect.
The proposed rules would limit foreign students to a maximum four-year stay, while journalists would face shorter visa periods, including 90-day stays for Chinese journalists.
Saylor questioned the policy’s broad restrictions and warned that allowing officials to deny extensions without appeal could lead to abuse, particularly against journalists critical of the government.
The judge scheduled another hearing for Oct. 2 as a coalition of universities, educators, and journalists challenges the new visa restrictions.
