Sen. Imee Marcos urged the government to provide immediate assistance to farmers who may be affected by the looming Super El Niño.
In line with Rice Awareness Month, she called for stronger support through drought-resistant rice seeds, water-efficient crops, and improved farming methods.
She also urged the Department of Agriculture to speed up irrigation and water storage projects to help farmers prepare for worsening dry conditions.
Marcos stressed the need to reduce farmers’ reliance on rice by promoting alternative crops such as sweet potato, cassava, and taro.
She also called for timely rice imports and faster delivery of assistance to farming communities.
