The Department of Agriculture (DA) said the 29.9-percent increase in palay farmgate prices in August could help farmers cope with higher production costs.
The Philippine Statistics Authority reported that palay prices rose from P17.06 to P22.16 per kilo compared to last year.
Prices increased in most major rice-producing areas, with Ilocos Region recording the biggest jump at 54 percent.
DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said higher prices could help farmers manage rising fuel, transport, and input costs.
The DA is also preparing measures to support farmers and rice supplies amid a possible severe El Niño.
