Alexandria Enriquez delivered the Philippines’ first gold medal at the 6th Asian Beach Games in Sanya Bay after dominating South Korea’s Yeonji Lee, 5-0, in the women’s 63kg jiu-jitsu final.
The 27-year-old grappler, competing in her first multi-sport event for the country, credited her victory to faith and described the win as a proud and emotional moment.
She had a strong campaign, securing back-to-back submissions in the early rounds before narrowly advancing to the semifinals on an advantage in sudden death.
Fellow Filipina Kaila Napolis also contributed a bronze medal in the -52kg category after a tight overtime win against Kazakhstan’s Zhibek Kulumbetova.
Despite early struggles in other sports such as aquathlon and beach handball, the jiu-jitsu medals helped give Team Philippines a positive start in the competition.
