EJ Obiena won the men’s pole vault gold medal at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya after clearing 5.91 meters at Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium.
The performance broke his own Asian Games record of 5.90 meters set at the 2022 Hangzhou Games and made him one of the Filipino athletes to win consecutive gold medals at the continental event.
Obiena credited his new training environment in Athens, Greece, and new coach Marcin Szczepanski for helping restore his confidence after a difficult year.
The 30-year-old pole vaulter said he was motivated to contribute to the Philippines’ medal campaign and enjoyed competing under pressure again.
With the next Asian Games set for five years later, Obiena’s victory could mark his final appearance at the continental competition.
