Former Senate President Franklin Drilon on Wednesday criticized the Senate majority bloc’s proposal to amend Senate rules to allow remote voting via teleconference, calling it a “tyranny of the majority” and warning it undermines the chamber’s credibility and independence.
He said the move is linked to the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte and raised concerns over its potential impact on Senate proceedings.
Drilon described the proposal as a “malicious and grave abuse of discretion,” urging the Supreme Court to intervene and declare it invalid.
He also backed the minority senators’ walkout during the plenary session, likening the situation to past controversial Senate episodes that led to political upheaval.
The proposal, introduced by Sen. Rodante Marcoleta, seeks to allow senators to participate in sessions remotely under justifiable circumstances using electronic means.
