The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has suspended tree-cutting activities along Quirino Avenue in Manila while it reviews mitigation measures for an ongoing infrastructure project.
DENR Acting Secretary Juan Miguel Cuna said the pause will allow a more detailed assessment of safeguards, including possible improvements to earth-balling and other environmental protections.
He emphasized that development must be balanced with environmental protection, noting that while infrastructure is necessary, its impacts on communities and ecosystems must be carefully considered.
The tree cutting has drawn criticism from environmental groups and church leaders, including Caritas Philippines, which raised concerns about the loss of mature trees and their impact on urban heat and public welfare.
The clearing is part of San Miguel Corporation’s Southern Access Link Expressway project, which will connect Skyway Stage 3 to Roxas Boulevard.
