DOH MONITORS HANTAVIRUS SITUATION, PREPARES LOCAL TESTING CAPACITY

The Department of Health (DOH) on May 8 said it is closely monitoring the hantavirus situation linked to the cruise ship Hondius while preparing local laboratories and quarantine systems for possible cases.

DOH spokesperson Dr. Albert Domingo said the agency has been receiving alerts from the World Health Organization’s International Health Regulations system even before the issue was publicly reported.

He emphasized that hantavirus is not a new but relatively rare disease, with symptoms similar to dengue and leptospirosis, such as fever, body aches, and fatigue, making patient history and exposure important for diagnosis.

Domingo also clarified that human-to-human transmission is rare and typically requires prolonged close contact, while the virus is usually spread through rodents or contaminated materials.

The DOH said it is preparing PCR testing capacity, coordinating with the Bureau of Quarantine for screening of Filipino seafarers, and reminding the public to maintain sanitation and avoid misinformation to prevent unnecessary panic.
