Department of Social Welfare and Development Secretary Rex Gatchalian denied claims that beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) were responsible for the recent increase in Meralco electricity bills.
Gatchalian said the higher charges were due to Meralco’s generation costs and stressed that 4Ps households consume very little electricity, usually limited to electric fans and light bulbs.
He noted that only 135,411 4Ps households are enrolled in the Lifeline Rate Subsidy Program compared to Meralco’s more than 8 million customers.
The DSWD chief also backed proposals to review the Expanded Lifeline Rate Law, saying Meralco should absorb the minimal costs as part of its corporate social responsibility.
Gatchalian added that the government remains committed to reducing poverty through the 4Ps program, which has already helped millions of beneficiaries finish their education.
