The Department of Energy (DOE) is considering temporary fuel purchase limits to prevent hoarding amid the global oil crisis triggered by the US-Israel attacks on Iran.
New operating guidelines will define prohibited acts, set preventive measures, and enhance monitoring and enforcement, including show-cause orders and legal action against violators.
Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said the measures aim to ensure fair distribution of petroleum products while supporting consumers and economic activity.
Lawmakers are also urging the DOE to explore temporary price caps on petroleum and LPG, though they stress this should be a last resort to avoid market disruption.
Meanwhile, officials emphasize the need for alternative energy sources, a national petroleum reserve, and greater transparency from oil companies to stabilize supply and prevent profiteering.
