Quezon City has launched a pioneering calorie labeling ordinance, the first of its kind in Southeast Asia, to promote healthier eating habits.
This initiative responds to rising concerns about obesity and non-communicable diseases, with alarming statistics showing that many residents are overweight or suffer from hypertension and high cholesterol.
The ordinance will require food establishments, beginning in December 2025, to display calorie counts for standardized menu items, helping consumers make informed dietary choices.
The city plans a phased implementation, starting with larger chains and gradually expanding to other businesses.
By providing transparent information, the ordinance aims to encourage mindful eating and reduce the risks of lifestyle-related health issues.
