Netflix’s hit film “KPop Demon Hunters” won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature on Sunday, telling the story of a K-pop girl group who secretly battle demons to protect humanity.
The movie, co-produced with Sony Pictures Animation, premiered in June 2025 and quickly became Netflix’s most-watched original film.
Its hit song “Golden”, which blends English and Korean lyrics, has also earned multiple awards and is nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars.
Set against a magical, shamanism-inspired Seoul, the film combines Korean culture, mythology, and a pop soundtrack, with a cast mostly composed of Korean actors.
Co-director Maggie Kang said the project took years to develop, aiming to capture the most authentic and vibrant representation of Korean culture.
