The Office of the Ombudsman has suspended Nueva Ecija Governor Aurelio M. Umali for one year without pay after finding him guilty of administrative complaints related to the irregular issuance of quarry permits without the required Environmental Compliance Certificate from 2014 to 2016.
Umali was charged with conduct prejudicial to the best interest of the service and simple misconduct for failing to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
The complaints against several other officials, including former Governor Czarina D. Umali and regional Mines and Geosciences Bureau directors, were dismissed.
The case stemmed from allegations that 205 commercial sand and gravel permits were issued to unqualified groups and that tax shares were not properly remitted to local government units.
The Ombudsman ruled that although Umali’s actions were not intentionally malicious, they still violated administrative rules, leading to his suspension.
