The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) says decongesting Metro Manila is key to permanently solving the region’s worsening traffic problem.
MMDA Chair Romando Artes highlighted that vehicle volume has surged from 3.2 million to 3.6 million per day due to more affordable cars and easier financing.
He proposed developing nearby provinces and relocating certain industries outside Metro Manila to reduce the number of vehicles on capital roads.
Artes also stressed the need to improve road infrastructure and public transportation to encourage commuting and lessen reliance on private cars.
Meanwhile, immediate measures, such as additional traffic personnel, signage, U-turn reconfigurations, and coordination with local malls to avoid peak-hour sales, have been implemented along congested areas like Marcos Highway.
