President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to cut construction material costs for infrastructure projects by 50 percent to prevent overpricing and ensure proper use of public funds.
He announced on Saturday during his departure speech at Villamor Air Base before attending the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia.
The DPWH found that materials such as asphalt, steel bars, and cement were overpriced by up to 50 percent, with some cases even higher.
The cost reduction is expected to save the government at least PHP30 to PHP45 billion in capital outlay spending.
Marcos also directed the DPWH to file cases against those involved in anomalous infrastructure projects, while the Bureau of Internal Revenue will ensure accountability for irregularities in flood control works.
