Bohol Rep. Kristine Tutor urged power companies not to use the peso’s record-low exchange rate against the US dollar as an excuse for unjustified electricity rate hikes.
She called on power distributors to explain and substantiate additional charges linked to peso depreciation.
Tutor also urged the Energy Regulatory Commission to scrutinize these charges and reject those unsupported by contracts or regulations.
Meanwhile, Meralco announced a P0.3191-per-kilowatt-hour increase in electricity rates for October due to higher generation costs.
The increase means households consuming 200 kWh monthly will pay around P64 more, with the overall rate rising to P15.0615 per kWh from P14.7424.
