ICC REJECTS RODRIGO DUTERTE’S REQUEST FOR INTERIM RELEASE

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has denied former President Rodrigo Duterte’s request for temporary release, citing his daughter’s public threat to “break him out” and his recent election as Davao City mayor as signs he still holds significant power to flee or obstruct justice.

The court ruled that Duterte’s continued detention is necessary to ensure his appearance at trial, prevent obstruction, and stop potential new crimes.

Despite defense proposals including electronic monitoring and release to a third country, the ICC found these insufficient to mitigate the risks.

The court also highlighted Duterte’s history of interfering with investigations and the influence of his family in Davao City, where alleged crimes occurred.

Medical arguments for release were dismissed as speculative, and the confirmation of charges hearing has been postponed as experts assess his fitness to participate.
