The Department of Education will partner with the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank to construct 55,000 classrooms to help reduce the national backlog of 165,000, with 15,000 funded by ADB and 40,000 by the World Bank under a public-private partnership.
Another package for 50,000 additional classrooms is being finalized, potentially bringing the total to over 100,000 classrooms in six years.
Under the PPP scheme, private firms will finance construction, and DepEd will pay them over a 10-year lease period.
A task force including the DPWH, local governments, and industry experts will finalize a unified cost structure, while a “classroom summit” will be held on Nov. 20 to involve contractors and civil society.
In a related move, DepEd allocated P1.35 billion for disaster-resilient learning materials, including learning packets and Dynamic Learning Program resources, to ensure education continuity during natural disasters.
