The Department of Education (DepEd) proposes shortening college by one semester by aligning and “downloading” general education subjects to the senior high school curriculum, removing 24 units from college courses.
This plan, developed with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, aims to address the disconnect between senior high school and college curricula and eliminate bridging programs.
Five core senior high school subjects will be renamed and aligned with college general education courses, while three college subjects—art appreciation, contemporary world, and ethics—will be removed.
The goal is to reduce redundancy and lessen the number of college years needed to graduate.
However, concerns remain about students choosing electives that may not fully prepare them for certain college programs, prompting CHED to review degree requirements.
