WAWAO BUILDERS FACES P48-M TAX CASE OVER ALLEGED ‘GHOST’ FLOOD PROJECT

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) filed a P48.39-million tax evasion case against Mark Allan Villamor Arevalo, owner of Wawao Builders, over a supposedly completed flood control project in Bulacan.

Arevalo faces charges for filing false income and VAT returns for the first and second quarters of 2024, claiming costs for a project that was never built.

The riverbank protection project in Barangay Caingin, Malolos City, awarded in January 2024, received P72.37 million, but a BIR and Commission on Audit review found no construction was done.

BIR Commissioner Charlito Mendoza said this is the 13th criminal complaint involving anomalous flood-control projects, with ongoing investigations covering P8.92 billion in potential tax liabilities.

Authorities are also looking into substandard or inflated projects and investigating all individuals, including possible politicians, linked to these anomalies.
