Sen. Kiko Pangilinan has urged government agencies and local government units to prepare and preposition relief goods ahead of the anticipated “Super El Niño,” warning that vulnerable communities will be hit hardest.
He called for prioritizing low-income families, farmers, fisherfolk, agricultural workers, senior citizens, children, pregnant women, persons with disabilities, and residents of geographically isolated areas.
Citing Republic Act No. 12287, or the Declaration of State of Imminent Disaster Act, Pangilinan stressed the need to prepare food and non-food assistance, response teams, water equipment, storage facilities, and distribution systems before conditions worsen.
He urged the Departments of Agriculture, Social Welfare and Development, Health, and the Interior and Local Government, along with the Office of Civil Defense and LGUs, to coordinate localized preparedness plans.
His eight-point action plan also includes securing funding, protecting farms and water systems, enforcing price controls, preventing hoarding and profiteering, providing livelihood assistance, and ensuring public accountability.
