SENATE PROPOSES 20% ACROSS-THE-BOARD BUDGET CUT

The Senate is considering a 15 to 20 percent budget cut across government agencies following allegations of overpriced and “ghost” infrastructure projects linked to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

Senate President Vicente Sotto III and other senators aim to eliminate excess funds used by corrupt officials for kickbacks.

Investigations have expanded to include delayed projects and overpriced roads involving the DPWH and other departments.

Meanwhile, Senate leaders are pushing to scrap the P250-billion unprogrammed appropriations, which critics call a new “pork barrel fund.”

Lawmakers from the Makabayan bloc condemned the rejection of accountability measures on these funds, accusing the majority of wanting to keep them as slush funds for corruption.
