In a dramatic turn of events at the 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad, International Master Daniel Quizon secured a notable victory for the Philippines by defeating Super Grandmaster Dimitrij Kollars in a 3-1 loss to Germany.
Quizon’s 54-move win in a Sicilian duel was the sole highlight for the Filipino team, which faced a tough day with their women’s squad suffering a severe 3.5-0.5 defeat against the strong American team.
The 20-year-old Quizon’s triumph not only marked one of the tournament’s major upsets but also brought him within two rating points of achieving the Grandmaster title, as his Elo rating climbed to 2498.
Despite drawing chances from IM Paulo Bersamina and GM John Paul Gomez, the Filipinos fell short, while the women’s team saw promising positions slip away due to critical blunders.
Looking ahead, Quizon will play against Montenegro in the third round, with GM Julio Catalino Sadorra expected to join the team on top board.
