PCG CHALLENGES CHINESE RESEARCH VESSEL NEAR PAG-ASA ISLAND

The Philippine Coast Guard deployed PCG Islander 4177 to monitor and challenge the Chinese research vessel Xiang Yang Hong 33 for conducting alleged unauthorized marine scientific research activities near Cay-2 and Cay-3 of Pag-asa Island.

The vessel, escorted by two Chinese Coast Guard ships, was reportedly seen landing personnel on Cay-2 before moving toward Cay-3, while around 20 Chinese Maritime Militia Vessels were also monitored in nearby waters.

PCG said the Xiang Yang Hong 33 has been under surveillance since April 18 for conducting “illegal” research operations across several areas in the West Philippine Sea without Philippine consent.

Rear Admiral Jay Tarriela noted that the continued presence of Chinese maritime militia vessels near Pag-asa Island and Escoda Shoal violates Philippine territorial and sovereign rights.

PCG Commandant Ronnie Gil Gavan vowed that the Philippines would remain resolute in protecting its maritime zones in line with the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr..
