Philippine Olympic Committee president Bambol Tolentino maintained that his eight-gold projection for the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games was achievable despite the Philippines finishing with four gold medals.
Carlos Yulo, EJ Obiena, and Jeus Yape delivered all four golds, while Team Philippines also won nine silvers and 16 bronzes.
Tolentino cited close losses, including Carlo Paalam’s disputed boxing final, Jean Claude Saclag’s MMA defeat, and Victoria Bossong’s bronze, as missed opportunities for additional golds.
He said several other results in jiu-jitsu and taekwondo were also affected by scoring and officiating decisions.
The Philippines finished with 29 medals overall, its biggest Asian Games haul since winning 42 medals at the 1966 Bangkok Games.
