The Department of Justice (DOJ) warned individuals who obtained Persons with Disability (PWD) IDs through deceptive means that they could face criminal charges.
Chief State Counsel Dennis Chan said nearly 6 million of the 8.5 million PWD ID holders are not registered in official records, causing significant economic losses to businesses and the government.
He reminded business owners that they cannot confiscate suspected fake PWD IDs but may verify them and file appropriate charges.
The DOJ said the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) is seeking its legal opinion on the proliferation of fake PWD IDs.
The NCDA is also working on a unified PWD ID system and database, with a two- to three-year transition period planned to verify records and remove duplicate registrations.
