NEW RULES ON SENATORS’ ABSENCES SOUGHT

Senate President Pro Tempore Vicente Sotto III has filed a resolution seeking clearer rules and sanctions for senators with prolonged unauthorized absences.

Senate Resolution 751 aims to address a gap in Senate rules that currently lacks specific penalties for lawmakers who fail to attend their duties without permission.

Sotto cited Sen. Ronald dela Rosa, who has been absent since the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant against him.

He said prolonged absenteeism prevents senators from performing their legislative responsibilities and wastes taxpayers’ money.

Sotto urged the Senate committee on rules to establish measures to address unauthorized absences among senators.
