MARCOS WARNS OF RISKS FROM SUBSTANDARD CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. vowed that the government will intensify its investigation into the proliferation of substandard construction materials to dismantle illegal supply chains and prevent structural disasters.

The move follows the NBI raid on Davao Mighty Steel Corp. in August, where authorities discovered allegedly substandard steel bars and unlicensed hazardous radioactive materials.

Marcos said the problem, which reportedly began in 2018, may be more widespread than initially believed and stressed that uncertified steel poses serious risks to buildings and infrastructure.

He called for stricter factory inspections and stronger regulatory enforcement to ensure that substandard materials do not reach government construction projects.

During his India trip, Marcos also highlighted the Philippines’ membership in the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure and discussed possible foreign participation in major railway projects.
