The Malabon local government met with the animal welfare group Biyaya to address animal welfare amid the illegal dog meat trade in the city.
Mayor Jeannie Sandoval highlighted programs that promote responsible animal care, vaccination, and proper treatment of pets to help ensure safer communities.
Biyaya President Rina Ortiz called for stronger enforcement, deeper investigations into supply chains, and accountability for those involved in illegal trade.
She stressed that animal welfare is also a public health and governance issue, requiring coordinated action with the police and health and sanitation departments.
The meeting also discussed humane population management through Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR) programs and other measures to protect animals and dismantle illegal trade networks.
