Former Bamban mayor Alice Guo and seven others were convicted of qualified human trafficking by a Pasig trial court and sentenced to life imprisonment, along with a ₱2-million fine each and forfeiture of the ₱6-billion Baofu compound in Tarlac.
The ruling marks the first conviction under Section 4(l) of the Anti-Human Trafficking Law for organizing trafficking activities.
The case stemmed from a joint raid on the Philippine offshore gaming operator Zun Yuan Technology, which was leased by Guo’s company, while several other accused individuals remain at large.
Officials, including the DOJ and the NBI, hailed the conviction as a milestone in the fight against trafficking, POGO-related abuses, and criminal syndicates.
Lawmakers and anti-trafficking advocates praised the verdict, saying it demonstrates that no operation or individual is above the law and provides justice to the victims.
