The International Criminal Court (ICC) may issue an arrest warrant for former President Rodrigo Duterte within the year, according to Kristina Conti, a lawyer representing victims of Duterte’s drug war.
Conti, who is involved in the ICC case, highlighted the challenge of accelerating the process due to ongoing drug-related killings and the influence of Duterte’s associates.
She pointed out that while other ICC cases, like those involving Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin, have progressed quickly, the Philippines case has been slower due to the complexity and duration of the investigations.
Conti emphasized the urgency to act against individuals still in power who could impact the investigation, such as Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa.
The issuance of a warrant would still require the approval of President Ferdinand Marcos, and the case could be bolstered by new evidence from ongoing House committee hearings.
