On the 40th anniversary of the People Power Revolution, progressive groups including Akbayan Party held rallies at EDSA calling for an “EDSA-inspired electoral revolution” to end political dynasties and corruption.
Akbayan President Rafaela David and representatives like Perci Cendaña and Leila De Lima emphasized that genuine democracy cannot exist while families such as the Marcoses and Dutertes dominate politics, urging reforms ahead of the 2028 elections.
The commemoration included a prayer march from the EDSA Shrine to the People Power Monument, wreath-laying ceremonies, and speeches highlighting the continued fight for accountability and democracy.
Tensions briefly rose when some rallyists dismantled police barricades along EDSA, leading to one arrest, though the march continued peacefully.
The event was attended by youth leaders, prominent public figures, and activists, with police deploying nearly 5,800 personnel to secure key areas in Manila.
