The Department of Agriculture (DA) urgently needs a bigger budget to support farmers and fishermen in boosting harvests and addressing challenges like African swine fever (ASF), a farmers’ group said.
AGAP Party-list Rep. Nicanor Briones highlighted that the DA’s budget has dropped from second to sixth place in national budget appropriations.
He called for a P500-billion allocation instead of the proposed P237.4 billion, which is only a 10 percent increase from the previous year.
Briones emphasized that current funding is insufficient to tackle ASF, hog vaccination, climate impacts like El Niño and La Niña, and rice supply issues.
A larger budget, he said, would help implement the national food security program and make food more affordable for Filipinos.
