The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has allocated P2.5 billion for a nine-month flood cleanup in Metro Manila to rehabilitate waterways and remove structures that worsen flooding.
The fund will cover operations on about 120 estuaries, rivers, and drainage channels across the Greater Metro Manila area.
DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon acknowledged that some government-built flood control projects, including past DPWH structures, have unintentionally aggravated flooding, citing streets built over esteros in Quezon City.
The cleanup campaign, directed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., aims to remove garbage, debris, and illegal structures clogging drainage systems.
Dizon stressed that proper funding and implementation will ensure the program produces tangible results rather than wasted resources.
