The Department of Education, led by Secretary Sonny Angara, is boosting its disaster preparedness and response program in the proposed 2026 budget to create safer and more climate-resilient public schools.
This comes after a year of over 20 typhoons and several major earthquakes that damaged classrooms and disrupted learning across the country.
The Senate version of the 2026 budget allocates P3.77 billion to DepEd’s Disaster Preparedness and Response Program, a nearly 467% increase from last year, while the Infrastructure for Safer and Resilient Schools Project is funded at P9.39 billion to rebuild over 4,700 school buildings.
The department has also rolled out programs like PlanSmart for Safe Schools, M7X School Ready, and Learning Continuity Spaces to ensure education continues in disaster-hit areas.
Both the DPRP and ISRS budgets are pending final approval from the bicameral conference committee.
