DA TO HIRE 23,000 FARMERS TO REVIVE BICOL ABACA INDUSTRY AFTER STORM

The Department of Agriculture (DA) will implement a cash-for-work program to help over 23,000 farmers rehabilitate abaca crops damaged by Super Typhoon Uwan in the Bicol Region.

More than 55,000 hectares across five provinces were affected, resulting in the loss of 7,492.90 metric tons of abaca, valued at around P30 million.

Under the program, farmers will clear debris, trim damaged stalks, reinforce standing plants, and replant uprooted crops, while PhilFIDA technicians assess damages and inspect farms.

Each participant will receive protective clothing, a cap, accident insurance, and cash incentives ranging from P3,000 to P10,000 per hectare, depending on damage severity.

The DA aims to restore 4,505.81 hectares of abaca farms within three months to support farmers and strengthen the region’s fiber industry.
