CHILDHOOD OBESITY RATES RISE IN THE PHILIPPINES, EXPERTS URGE ACTION

Childhood overweight and obesity in the Philippines have tripled over the past 20 years, with 12.9% of school-age children and 12.5% of adolescents affected, according to the 2023 National Nutrition Survey.

UNICEF Philippines nutrition manager Alice Nkoroi attributed the rise to unhealthy diets, limited access to nutritious foods, and environmental factors.

She warned that obesity puts children at risk of non-communicable diseases, micronutrient deficiencies, and learning difficulties, while also increasing the likelihood of bullying.

Nkoroi called for a whole-of-society approach, including promoting breastfeeding, regulating food marketing, subsidizing healthy foods, and creating healthier school environments.

She emphasized that families, government, and the food industry must all work together to ensure children have access to nutritious diets and supportive systems.
