Senator Camille Villar has filed the “Barangay Breastfeeding Centers Act” to establish dedicated breastfeeding centers in every barangay nationwide.
The proposed centers will provide free breastfeeding guidance, educational materials, and regular training for barangay health workers to better support mothers and infants.
Villar emphasized that breastfeeding is vital for infant nutrition, immunity, and maternal mental health, yet only 34 percent of Filipino infants under six months are exclusively breastfed.
The bill seeks to strengthen existing breastfeeding laws and promote child survival while easing financial burdens on families.
Villar highlighted the initiative during National Breastfeeding Awareness Month, calling breastfeeding support a shared community responsibility.
