UNTRACKED CHINESE SHIPS RAISE SECURITY CONCERNS FOR THE PHILIPPINES

Vessels operating in Philippine waters are increasingly exploiting loopholes in the Automatic Identification System (AIS), allowing them to switch identities, flags, and locations to hide activities, experts say.

Local dredgers, cargo ships, tankers, and even Chinese state-linked maritime vessels have been observed manipulating AIS to obscure ownership and regulatory compliance.

This creates blind spots for authorities, enabling foreign-controlled ships to operate beyond authorized zones, potentially for intelligence gathering or resource mapping.

AI-powered tracking and private maritime intelligence can detect suspicious activity, but gaps remain in international coordination and data sharing.

Recently, the Chinese research vessel Tan Suo Er Hao was monitored conducting surveys in the Philippine EEZ without consent, highlighting the strategic and scientific implications of AIS manipulation and “gray zone” maritime tactics.
