Senator Erwin Tulfo criticized the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for failing to fulfill its mandate to protect the environment during Senate deliberations on the agency’s proposed 2026 budget.
He questioned why the government should allocate P27 billion to DENR when the agency has allegedly neglected its duties, citing issues such as illegal logging, mining, and infrastructure in protected areas.
Tulfo presented photos and videos from sites like Cantilan, Surigao del Sur, Bulacan, Zamboanga del Norte, and the Sierra Madre to support his claims. At the same time, DENR remained silent or gave unclear responses.
Senator Loren Legarda, defending the budget, admitted her frustration over the agency’s lack of proactiveness.
Tulfo concluded by urging his colleagues to act with compassion to protect the environment, emphasizing the vital role of the Sierra Madre in safeguarding Luzon from typhoons.
