The Department of Agriculture (DA) announced a temporary moratorium on sugar importation until mid-2026 to stabilize the local sugar market.
The government will not import sugar until the current milling season ends in May or June 2026, according to DA officials.
This decision was made during a meeting to address low raw sugar prices observed at a recent bidding in Negros.
Any future imports will be strictly classified as reserve sugar and not allowed to enter the domestic market directly, protecting local farmers’ prices.
The DA also plans to maintain a two-month buffer stock of refined sugar to ensure market stability.
