The South African embassy in Manila has warned its nationals about a surge in drug-related arrests in the Philippines, prompting authorities to classify South Africa as a red-flag country.
Over the past year, many arrests involved travelers from or transiting through Johannesburg, and several intercepted drug shipments were traced to the city.
The warning follows the arrest of a South African national at Ninoy Aquino International Airport with P40.8 million worth of shabu, as Philippine authorities investigate possible syndicate links in South Africa.
The embassy stressed that Philippine law imposes life imprisonment for drug trafficking, with no exemptions for foreigners, and that economic hardship or ignorance of the law is not a defense.
Nationals were advised that transit through other countries may also carry severe penalties, and the embassy can only provide limited consular assistance, not financial aid or release.
