SINGSON’S WITHDRAWAL IS NOTED BUT VOTES WILL NOT COUNT, COMELEC CLARIFIES

Former Ilocos Sur Governor Luis “Chavit” Singson’s name will remain on the ballot for the May 12 midterm elections despite his withdrawal from the senatorial race, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) confirmed.

Comelec Chairman George Garcia explained that reprinting ballots to remove Singson’s name is not possible, but votes for him will be deemed stray and not counted.

Singson announced his withdrawal for health reasons but has not yet submitted the formal, notarized document required by Comelec.

Garcia also emphasized that candidates must personally submit their withdrawal notices to ensure validity.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court ruled that lack of campaign funds is not grounds for disqualifying a candidate, affirming the right of all citizens to run for office regardless of wealth.
