Senator Jinggoy Estrada has filed bills seeking the creation of a Department of Disaster Resilience (DDR) and a nationwide food bank system to enhance the Philippines’ disaster preparedness and response.
The DDR would serve as the lead agency for disaster risk reduction, emergency response, and long-term recovery, while the Disaster Food Bank and Stockpile Act aims to establish relief hubs in every province and highly urbanized city.
Estrada emphasized that the proposals are meant to complement the Ligtas Pinoy Centers Act and address common issues like delayed aid and hunger during crises.
These stockpiles would include essential items like food, water, medical supplies, and tents, and would prioritize remote and vulnerable communities.
He stressed that such proactive measures could save lives and speed up recovery when disasters strike.
