Vice President Sara Duterte claimed that the Marcos administration’s P20 per kilo rice program was stopped because the government knew it could not deliver on the promise.
She said that the program was halted just a day after its launch because the government was unable to fulfill the promise of selling rice at such a low price.
The Department of Agriculture (DA) announced the temporary suspension of the program until May 13, or after the 2025 elections, following advice from Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chair George Garcia.
DA spokesperson Arnel de Mesa confirmed that they are awaiting clarification from Comelec but will comply with the suspension in the meantime.
He assured the public that there is enough rice supply to continue the program once it resumes, with 370,000 metric tons of rice available.
